The viewer will see in action how Christian and Jewish scholarship meshes in order to enrich the knowledge and understanding of both communities. Rabbi Roger Klein and Rev. George Smiga demonstrate how mutual scholarship breathes new life and vitality into ancient texts and how our contemporary wisdom is expanded through such study. This program was given as a part of the Rabbi Samuel Meyer Memorial Lecture Series that has in the past had such notables as Joseph Fitzmyer, SJ and Rabbi Alon Soshen-Gottstein as presenters. The humor and hard work of both Rabbi Klein and Rev. Smiga are apparent in this DVD presentation. Rabbi Klein has done intensive study in Judaica in Jerusalem and in Christian Theology at Tubingen University in Germany. He is author of numerous books and articles. Rev. George Smiga teaches scripture and homiletics at St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland and has held the Walter and Mary Tuohy Chair of interreligious studies at John Carroll University. He has written two books, “The Gospel of John Set Free: Preaching without Anti-Judaism” and “Pain and Polemic: Anti-Judaism in the Gospels.”
The participants were given amble opportunities for questions. The DVD also has a 10-minute discussion by Rev. Jeffrey Mickler SSP, PhD and Rev. George Balasko on the approach of Paul Achtemeier to St. Paul.
