This is a master’s level course on the Gospel of Matthew. It represents a lifetime of scholarship and research by one of the world’s leading experts on the New Testament. Rev. Viviano is familiar with all the pivotal works on the Gospel but even more importantly knows personally the authors who wrote them. His ability to demonstrate how the faith and spirituality of the scholars influences their approach to the sacred scripture makes this program unique. He points out what and why the various protestant scholars stress certain passages and not others and shows how these differ from the numerous Catholic approaches. He even brings out how the various religious orders, Dominican, Franciscan and Jesuits will approach the scripture from different angles determined in part by their own spiritualities and charisms.
In developing his presentations Rev. Viviano give his insights into the history of the debates about the Gospel of Matthew within the contexts of the broader movements in the Church as a whole. In doing this he presents a rich wellspring of knowledge and understanding that ultimately gives the listener a sense of the sweeping historical tides that have swept the religious world during the past fifty years. He brings home the enormous pastoral, ecclesial, and ethical impact that various interpretations of the Gospel will have.
Lovers of the Word of God, Preachers and teachers, will come away from listening to this program with many questions answered in dazzling new ways and will also be left with further questions that will stimulate their hunger for further personal study.
