Helping Children to Grieve Death and to Move Toward Healing

How do you tell a child about the death of a parent, sibling, close relative, or friend? Once that death has been made known, how do you answer children’s questions about what caused the person to die, and what happens next? Then, as the grieving process begins, what are some constructive ways for children to express strong reaction to loss? These and other questions are answered in “Teaching Children to Grieve,” a powerful, practical presentation by Sister Carole Riley, Ph.D., LPC. In addition to offering parents, teachers and school counselors numerous coping skills for grieving children, Sr. Carole shares insights regarding which behaviors are normal responses to death, and which may be cause for concern. While she advocates giving children enough space in which to grieve in their own way, Sr. Carole also stresses the importance of helping grieving children celebrate the present.
