This hard-bound work of a skilled and careful biblical scholar, illustrates the books of Sacred Scripture beginning with the biblical, historical, archaeological and social context that surrounded the origin of the passages from the Old and New Testaments. By means of brief and timely texts, alternating with more than 80 full-color entirely new maps, this work hopes to offer in very brief format the maximum amount of information to assist the average person in a comprehension of the biblical text and to awaken the desire to delve even deeper. Giving life to the reading of the text which it accompanies are tables, graphs, designs and countless photographs. The history of salvation is explained and illustrated in 24 chapters, each one of which is put together in the following order: Biblical Context: General information regarding the biblical books, their composition, theology and protagonists. Historical Context: The reconstruction of events which accompanied the biblical facts: the people, cities, important persons. Archaeology: The presentation of documents which surround the Scriptures: the buildings, documents, writings hidden in the past and discovered by means of the patient work of archaeologists. Flashes: Sidebars containing information of an historical nature which peak our curiosity: brief annotations that enable us to better understand the terms under consideration. Reflections: Thoughts of a theological or historical nature by a Father of the Church, a rabbi, or other respected author which enable us to hear and read the story from another point of view. About the Author: After his theological studies Giacomo Perego, a priest of the Society of St Paul, completed the Licentiate in Biblical Sciences at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He attended specialist courses at the École Biblique et Archéologique Française in Jerusalem, where he is currently engaged in doctoral reseach; he also assists with the editing of biblical material for Edizioni San Paolo.
