Paul’s great letter is an extension of the Sermon on the Mount and a mature reflection on the nature of salvation for Jews and Gentiles alike. The speaker draws upon years of reflection and research that explains the letter in light of the politics and the religious experience and practices of Rome and Jerusalem in the first century. The issues of salvation for non-Christians, the role of Jews, the nature of sin and depravity, the plan for the cosmos and the natural world, the struggle for growth in God, the nature of freedom and the law, the relationship of the believing community to the existing social order are all directly relevant to the debates of the twenty first century and this inspired letter properly understood can guide the current debates. The listener will come away from this series of talks with a sense of what it means to live in Christ and how individual believers and the Church as a whole should relate to the world, other religions and the Spirit cast a light on a darkened and depraved world so that his readers become powerful manifestations of God’s love and forgiveness in the midst of the world. Believers have that exact same calling and responsibility today.
