Accepting limits within unlimited expectations. Using insights from his extensive pastoral and clinical background, Fr. Dlugos explains how burnout, with its fatigue and frustrations results from devotion to a cause that fails to produce the expected rewards. It comes about through the individual failing to set boundaries or acknowledge emotions. It results from ignoring personal needs, blaming others for feelings of isolation, persecution, and even despair. It is not the amount of work that causes burnout but the depth and breadth of the illusions we have about the Church, the world and ourselves. The person heading for burnout has a masked narcissism that is often covered by a veneer of being a martyr or a messiah. The burn out person drains the energy of those they work with and infects others with a dark and cynical view of the world, the Church and even life itself.
Step by step, Fr. Dlugos explains how we can better integrate our feelings, work, our relationships so that we can be truly alive in the service of God and neighbor. Priesthood is a vocation that deserves to be lived with a joy and passionate commitment that lasts a lifetime.
