Probably no biblical author has been more vilified and cordially disliked than St. Paul! Those who have a problem with authority or institution assert that he betrayed Jesus; they claim Jesus came as a prophet to preach the Kingdom and Paul proceeded to found a church. Other baseless aberrations fault him for being anti-Semitic, anti-feminist and anti-marriage. All such accusations result from quoting him out of context.
That has been the problem even for Paul’s friends and defenders throughout church history. Practically every heresy sprang from isolating a text of his and building a revolution on it. The whole picture however shows Paul to be a genius, the first Christian theologian, charismatic pastor and spiritual director. Paul was a man of great vision as well as tender sensitivity. He can, if read in entirety and in context be a sure guide for church renewal and life in Christ today. He is an expert in showing us what it means to be a Christian.
