Probably no biblical author has been more vilified and cordially disliked than St. Paul! Those who have a problem with authority or institution assert that he betrayed Jesus; they claim Jesus came as a prophet to preach the Kingdom and Paul proceeded to found a church. Other baseless aberrations fault him for being anti-Semitic, anti-feminist and anti-marriage. All such accusations result from quoting him out of context.
The corrupt urban society of Corinth was a fertile ground for Paul’s preaching. His success in this pagan and hedonistic culture had a profound impact on the development of Christianity throughout the ages. The author explains verse by verse the historical and social background of Paul’s two letters to the Corinthians. He brings the texts alive and demonstrates clearly how inspired Paul was when faced with the daunting task of changing the Corinthians into the very body of Christ. The letters deal with issues that have been relevant throughout history and will continue to inspire the Church till the end of time. Fr. Doyle also argues that a few of the passages on women that have been so often used to vilify Paul may in fact be interpolations into the texts. It is clear from Fr. Doyle’s presentation that these letters of Paul written in the first century are extremely important for the Church of the twenty?first century.
