Kevin McKenna presents Canon Law as a pastoral tool to help priests and lay people alike. Canon law is infused with a spirit that helps define rights and obligations and make practical the teaching of the Church.
In these presentations, we learn of the history and importance of Canon law and how it is one of the essential elements of forming a vibrant community of faith. McKenna presents the essentials that every pastor and informed lay person should know about Canon law and how we must avoid a rigid fundamentalist approach to the Canons which does not place individual canons in their proper context. He warns, however, that there are real pastoral problems and serious consequences when the law is ignored.
He explains how the laity has rights and why it is important that they be informed of them. He shows how priests in the law have a great number of obligations but actually very few rights but it is important to know what these rights are.
He brings to light how Canon Law is an aid to understanding baptism, marriage and the ordained state. He gives an overview of the canons on marriage and explains the hot button issues of disparity of cult, marriages that need special permissions, etc.
Some people have quipped that Canon law is the arterial sclerosis of the mystical body. Once a person has heard this presentation he or she will understand that it is not the dark side of the Good News but is an important tool in the Church for meeting the needs of the people of God and helping to shape their souls.
