Description

This is a dangerous book – if you take the Gospel seriously. By our baptism all of us – priests, religious, laypersons – accepted a calling to be prophets of Christ’s liberating Good News. The problem is we tend to get complacent, a little too comfortable in our roles. We take God for granted and don’t give God a chance. Father O’Malley wants to shake us up a bit. His honest, down-to-earth, straightforward meditations do just that. And with a sense of humor.

Why Not? is a powerful challenge to give God a chance to change you. 63 reflections on the Gospel are vintage O’Malley: outrageously imaginative, brazenly impudent, yet always focused on a terribly demanding but attractive Christ. No way to describe it; read it and … gulp. You’ll laugh and weep, feel ashamed and refreshed. You might even risk all.” Walter J. Burghardt, SJ.

About the Author: Father William J. O’Malley, SJ, has had extensive experience in writing, teaching, acting and directing. A native of Buffalo, NY, he received his BA, MA and Ph.L. degrees from Fordham University and his Bachelor of Theology degree from Woodstock College. His long teaching career has included eleven years at McQuaid Jesuit High School. Fr. O’Malley’s nine published books include The Living Word (2 vols., Paulist Press), The Voice of Blood (Orbis Books) and Love And Justice (Loyola University Press). The next time you see the film, The Exorcist, watch out for the character “Joe Dyer” — that’s Fr. O’Malley playing the part.
